But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, `People need more than bread for their life; they must feed on every word of God.’ “ – Matthew 4:4 (NLT)
After fasting for 40 days and nights, Jesus was tempted by Satan to produce bread to settle His own hunger. How like the Adversary to come at a time of extreme weakness and attack with the one thing that is desired the most. It is at the pinnacle of spiritual victory that we are most likely to succumb to the attacks of our enemy. When our prayer life is at its strongest, Satan attacks. When we spend time every day reading and meditating on God’s Word, the Accuser begins to throw guilt in the way of our spiritual growth.
Jesus does not deny that the temptation is real but instead demonstrates the one true antidote to Satanic attack – a spiritual feast on the very words of God. The secret to overcoming is not found in mere religiosity or the right creedal system, but in the renewal that comes from the welcoming flow of God’s revelation into our minds and hearts. If we are not ingesting the Word of God as a part of our regular experience and allowing it to infiltrate every aspect of our thinking, then we are setting ourselves up for spiritual failure. To be protected, we must put on the armor of God.
PRAYER THOUGHT: Father, I commit myself anew to your Word revealed in my mind and heart. Strengthen me and empower me against the attack of the Accuser.
