Reflecting back a few years ago, I remember thinking I knew everything about being a great parent. I thought I knew all the best techniques for raising happy, smart and well-behaved children, while simultaneously running a clean and efficient household. And then I actually had a child.

After a few sleepless and chaotic months, and one instance of leaving home only to realize en route I was still wearing my fuzzy house slippers, I realized I didn’t know as much as I thought I did about caring for a young child while still managing my day to day life.  It was all much harder than I had ever anticipated it would be.

One day while I was chatting with my sister-in-law who has a daughter about the same age as my own, she mentioned a book that she said had helped her tremendously: Coach Mom: 7 Strategies For Organizing Your Family Into An All-Star Team.

In this book, author Brenna Stull presents seven key principles that can help parents manage their households and daily lives of their families with more efficiency and less stress. For each of the key principles, she details seven practical applications that help demonstrate how these ideas can be applied to real life situations. A good example of the helpful tips contained inside this book is how nap-time is prime time.  This  includes the rule “only do what you cannot do when the baby is awake,” which means tackling tasks such as folding laundry and cleaning the house while your child or children are awake, while saving tasks that require concentration or silence, such as making phone calls or paying bills, for nap-time. Though for a few people ideas such as this might seem obvious, when you are a sleep deprived new mom who is still trying to adjust to being completely responsible for a new life while still handling all of your other responsibilities, having tips like these spelled out in front of you and organized against a larger framework is incredibly helpful. If you are a mother of young children or have one on the way, put this on your must-read list. This book would also make a great gift for any new or expectant mother in your life.
