I have always admired my friends who could skateboard and pull off tricks like ollies, kickflips, and manuals. Unfortunately two things prohibited me from skateboarding: a mother who wouldn’t buy me a skateboard for fear that I would come home with a broken bone sticking out of my arm, and my own fear of getting hurt. When I would ask my friends tips on skating, the first thing they said was that I couldn’t be afraid of falling down and getting hurt. Letting go of fear and trusting in a helmet, knee pads, elbow pad, and wrist guards for protection is key to skateboarding, but very hard to do.

The Bible is full of amazing stories of the faithful who obey and serve God no matter how difficult or impossible their future seemed. When you read their stories you see they let go of things like sin, pride, worry, shame, and fear. Letting go and trusting in God are integral to the Christian journey.

When you are a new Christian, you are learning to let go of sin and trust in Jesus. But even if you aren’t a new believer, Christians have to learn everyday how to let go of stress and worry and to trust in God’s provision. I have even heard elderly Christians talk about letting go of “what might have been” and trust in the Lord to help them in raising the next generation of faithful believers.

A few years ago I let go of my fear and put my trust in God and safety equipment as I learned how to drop into a half-pipe. My goal was to experience skateboarding so that I could better relate to the students in my youth group who had a passion for the sport. I was able to successfully skate in the half-pipe for the afternoon that day and the best part? I didn’t even fall.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 HCSB)

God may be calling you to let go of something and fully trust in Him. At the end of day you may find yourself having fun doing something you never thought you could.
