Guest Devotional – Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 12:1-2, wordsearchbible, devotionalTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 12:1-2 (NET)

Over the last few weeks, the Lord has consistently been reminding me to keep my eyes fixed on Him. He took me to Matthew 14 the other day, and we re-read the story of Peter walking on the water. The Lord had invited Peter to share in His wonder, and Peter accepted the invitation. But when Peter evaluated his situation and saw the wind and waves, he almost sank.

I wish that I could say that I can’t relate to Peter, but I can. The Lord invites me to share in His work, I excitedly accept, then I look at the circumstances and allow the baby tares of doubt and fear to take root. I take my eyes off of the one who initiated the work and look at the impossibility of it.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” The Chinese proverb speaks to the image put in front of us, but what about when no actual image is offered? What if you just have words that cause your mind to paint the picture?

When teaching Hermeneutics a few years ago, we took a sharp look at the culture to help determine the possible meaning behind pictorial wording. The example used was, “Heap burning coals on his head…” from Romans 12, below:

Remembering September 11

9/11, September 11, wordsearch bible

Most people remember exactly where they were on September 11, 2001.

That morning, I walked into my math class where my teacher uncharacteristically had the radio on, listening to the news. The first plane had hit. When class was over, a few of us rushed down to the school library where they had a TV on the news channel. We watched the footage, horrified, as they played the images of terrorism over and over.

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’ (1 Pet. 1:14-16).

Have you ever been to an animal shelter to look for a pet? There are many cute and cuddly dogs and cats, who are well-trained and would make excellent pets found there. There are others, however, for whatever reason, that bark and may try to bite you, who exhibit anti-social behavior. Most people usually pass them by, but there can be potential in them, if you look past what they are and think of what they can become. Cleaning them up and training them not to be a menace to themselves and humans, some can go through a transformation that offers company and enjoyment for years to come.

Devotional – Daniel’s Steadfast Faith

Daniel 3:17-18

Sometimes when crazy things are going on all around us, it’s hard to remember that God keeps His promises. He reminded me of this in my Old Testament Sunday school class recently when we talked about Daniel, who was incredibly steadfast in his faith. He is one of the only Bible characters that doesn’t seem to mess up. As a teenager, he is taken from his home and made to serve the king (who is probably insane I might add), and the first thing he does is make a deal with his official to let him stay kosher.

Ever find yourself in a place either geographically, emotionally, or spiritually that just doesn’t seem right? No matter how or where you turn it just isn’t good. If you were to really be honest, could it be that you are there due to your poor choices?

I’ve been there. I found myself floundering about, trying ever so hard to just get some kind of foothold, but it is as if I am climbing a wet mossy rock pile, slipping and never getting to the top. The only view I see is that of a cliff off to my right, and to the left the threat of falling is eminent.
