I have always admired my friends who could skateboard and pull off tricks like ollies, kickflips, and manuals. Unfortunately two things prohibited me from skateboarding: a mother who wouldn’t buy me a skateboard for fear that I would come home with a broken bone sticking out of my arm, and my own fear of getting hurt. When I would ask my friends tips on skating, the first thing they said was that I couldn’t be afraid of falling down and getting hurt. Letting go of fear and trusting in a helmet, knee pads, elbow pad, and wrist guards for protection is key to skateboarding, but very hard to do.

Devotional – Daniel’s Steadfast Faith

Daniel 3:17-18

Sometimes when crazy things are going on all around us, it’s hard to remember that God keeps His promises. He reminded me of this in my Old Testament Sunday school class recently when we talked about Daniel, who was incredibly steadfast in his faith. He is one of the only Bible characters that doesn’t seem to mess up. As a teenager, he is taken from his home and made to serve the king (who is probably insane I might add), and the first thing he does is make a deal with his official to let him stay kosher.

Faith is only as good as its object. The man in the jungle bows before an idol of stone and trusts it to help him, but he receives no help. No matter how much faith a person may generate, if it is not directed at the right object, it will accomplish nothing. “I believe” may be the testimony of many sincere people, but the big question is, “In whom do you believe? What do you believe?” We are not saved by faith in faith; we are saved by faith in Christ as revealed in His Word. – Bible Exposition Commentary (BE Series) – New Testament – The Bible Exposition Commentary – New Testament, Volume 2.

Ever know someone, or read about a quality a person has, and think, “I want some of what they have.”

I recently had those thoughts, not in a jealous way, but a “divine gotta have’” way. In my study time I came across a gutsy gal in Mark 5:24-34, the woman with the bleeding condition. Oh I know, when we get to this area of Scripture, due to the topic we may tend to skim fast over it, yet it has amazing lessons for us.

God our Heavenly Father is truly the everlasting God, King above all, Lord forever. We can completely trust Him because He always stays true to His Word and never changes (James 1:17). We change. Sometimes we get tired of waiting for God and we start trying to work things out ourselves, only to end up getting in the way. We realize it when we see the struggles we cause for ourselves. Then we start wondering why God allowed us to fall into the hole we were so anxious to dig.

Weekly Devotional – The Words of God

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWords are my passion. I love the big ones, the little ones, the ambiguous ones and the vivid ones that translate abstract ideas into language we share with other humans. When Eliza Doolittle sings about being fed up with words in My Fair Lady, I cringe. I don’t think I could ever become disillusioned with words.

But my passion soars to higher spheres when dealing with certain words: words that flow from the mouth of God. So, it won’t surprise you to know how meaningful I find His choice of imagery to introduce us to our Savior: “In the beginning was the Word,”John tells us. “And the Word was with God and the Word was God” (John 1:1 HCSB). God chooses to reveal Himself to us through words.
