Last week, two of us WORDsearch ladies attended the Daily Disciples 8th Annual Women’s Conference. The theme of the event was The Power of Friendships, and the foundational verse for the gathering was John 15:13, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” Tonilee Adamson and Bobbye Brooks, founders of Daily Disciples, spoke to a gathering of 400 women about the implications this verse has in our daily lives and the significance of Christ speaking these words shortly before he laid down his own life.

In addition to Tonilee and Bobbye’s teachings, June Hunt was an honored guest and spoke to us about friendship using content from her Biblical Counseling Library. June defined friendship, gave examples of different levels of friendship, spoke about the different friendships of Jesus, analyzed what causes friendships to fail, and presented wise counsel on how to nurture existing friendships and forge new ones. Her entire teaching was laced with scripture and stories representative of God’s work in one woman’s lifetime of friendships.

My favorite teaching of the day was an examination of Jonathan and David’s friendship as recorded in 1 Samuel 18-23. In this passage of scripture, we see that Jonathan understood the heart of the Lord. He understood that the kingdom had been torn away from his family and given to David. Yet, Jonathan didn’t sulk, he didn’t resist the word of the Lord, he didn’t hate David or give into the jealousy that plagued his father, Saul. Instead, he agreed with God’s plan wholeheartedly. He promoted David, defended David, and gave David everything that was in his power to give. In a very real way, Jonathan laid down his life for David. Jonathan embodied one of the best examples of the type of friend God calls us to be.

In between the powerful teachings, we were blessed to show the attendees how to use WORDsearch to further their study of God’s Word. We demonstrated some of the basic functionality of the program and promoted some of our favorite content. Our hope was to inspire women to use the resources available to them to abide in the Word of God, because it’s in the Word that our lives and friendships are eternally changed.
