Staff Pick – Men of Character: Joseph

MOCJosephEach week the blog will feature a favorite book of a staff member that’s available on WORDsearch.

The best book I have read recently is Joseph from the Men of Character series by Gene Getz. It’s a great Bible study manual, and it’s written in that creative leader building style that Gene has been known for over the past five decades.

I love biographies, I love to read how people overcome adversity and I love to learn stuff. I also relate to Joseph’s trials. I was the last of five brothers, who all shared one bedroom. I was seven years younger than the closest brother next to me, and I was also a victim of older sibling torture.

This book has renewed my spirit again and again and has reminded me how using biblical principals instead of fights can produce better relationships and champion over any attacks and trials in my life.

Staff Pick – God’s Word for Students

IMG_8223Each week the blog will feature a favorite book of a staff member that’s available on WORDsearch.

My favorite book that I keep returning to in my WORDsearch library is God’s Word for Students by Wayne Rice. Though at first glance this book may not look like much and that it is something for children, I have found practical and Scriptural advice from it daily. Because it is written for students, there is no jargon that you have to wade through, so it delivers a message that is easy to understand and to remember. This devotional always provokes thought in me and makes me want to apply it to my life. I believe that anyone of any age can see the good wisdom in this book and find a way to apply it in your life.  So before you judge a book by its cover, take it from me that sometimes it the small things in life that pack the most wisdom.

Weekly Devotional – Being Grateful for Work

“God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”   Psalm 51:10

A few weeks ago, our department’s supervisor called us into the conference room for a meeting. As we all sat down, she stood up and asked us to tell everyone what we were grateful for about our jobs so she could write it on the whiteboard. Soon the room was filled with the sound of people speaking up—and did I mention that this was a room full of introverted developers?

Staff Pick – Coach Mom

Reflecting back a few years ago, I remember thinking I knew everything about being a great parent. I thought I knew all the best techniques for raising happy, smart and well-behaved children, while simultaneously running a clean and efficient household. And then I actually had a child.

After a few sleepless and chaotic months, and one instance of leaving home only to realize en route I was still wearing my fuzzy house slippers, I realized I didn’t know as much as I thought I did about caring for a young child while still managing my day to day life.  It was all much harder than I had ever anticipated it would be.

Staff Pick – Daily Disciples Bible Study Series

My favorite collection that we offer is the Daily Disciples Bible Study Series.  I was actually first referred to this series by one of my customers last year, and I now use this program for my Bible study and have enjoyed its content greatly.  This series does a good job of providing unique perspectives, displaying meaningful devotionals as well as asking some discussion questions that really work well for a group setting.
