Weekly Devotional – The Words of God

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWords are my passion. I love the big ones, the little ones, the ambiguous ones and the vivid ones that translate abstract ideas into language we share with other humans. When Eliza Doolittle sings about being fed up with words in My Fair Lady, I cringe. I don’t think I could ever become disillusioned with words.

But my passion soars to higher spheres when dealing with certain words: words that flow from the mouth of God. So, it won’t surprise you to know how meaningful I find His choice of imagery to introduce us to our Savior: “In the beginning was the Word,”John tells us. “And the Word was with God and the Word was God” (John 1:1 HCSB). God chooses to reveal Himself to us through words.

View from Point Loma Nazarene University

Last week, two of us WORDsearch ladies attended the Daily Disciples 8th Annual Women’s Conference. The theme of the event was The Power of Friendships, and the foundational verse for the gathering was John 15:13, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” Tonilee Adamson and Bobbye Brooks, founders of Daily Disciples, spoke to a gathering of 400 women about the implications this verse has in our daily lives and the significance of Christ speaking these words shortly before he laid down his own life.

In addition to Tonilee and Bobbye’s teachings, June Hunt was an honored guest and spoke to us about friendship using content from her Biblical Counseling Library. June defined friendship, gave examples of different levels of friendship, spoke about the different friendships of Jesus, analyzed what causes friendships to fail, and presented wise counsel on how to nurture existing friendships and forge new ones. Her entire teaching was laced with scripture and stories representative of God’s work in one woman’s lifetime of friendships.

Weekly Devotional: A Spiritual Check-up

Body of female doctorRead Mark 11:12-26

A spiritual check-up is necessary if we are to achieve our maximum potential.  Jeremiah warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, / And desperately wicked; / Who can know it?  I, the Lord, search the heart, / I test the mind, / Even to give every man according to his ways, / According to the fruit of his doings” (Jeremiah 17:9-10).  Therefore, I do not recommend that you trust your self-diagnosis.  David, a man after God’s own heart, understood this when he prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; / Try me, and know my anxieties; / And see if there is any wicked way in me, / And lead me in the way everlasting.”
